What skills or experiences did you gain in college that have been valuable in your career thus far?
During college, I worked on a trading desk for six months as part of my co-op program at Northeastern University. The experience proved to be a valuable lesson in maintaining composure under pressure, which has since become an indispensable skill in my current career. I often find myself operating within tight timeframes and high-pressure environments. Nevertheless, it is crucial for me to project an air of calmness and confidence. This builds trust with clients, assuring them of our capabilities and control in high-pressure situations.
Why did you choose A&M and restructuring as a career?
I chose A&M and restructuring because I was looking for a career that would continually challenge me. The opportunities available at A&M were unparalleled compared to other roles. The flat structure within the deal teams allowed me to learn from the best professionals at A&M right from the start of my career. Furthermore, engaging in restructurings frequently brings together top-level decision-makers, such as management teams, board members, legal experts and financial advisors. Being involved in these transactions early on provides a distinctive chance to collaborate and gain knowledge from these influential industry leaders. The complexities of restructuring have pushed me to grasp intricate concepts and quickly adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. This accelerated learning has been a valuable aspect of my career at A&M.
How do you stay current with industry trends and developments, and which resources do you rely on for ongoing learning and growth?
I actively engage in conversations within my professional network to stay well-informed. Attending industry networking events and regularly connecting with colleagues are invaluable ways to stay current and maintain a strong knowledge base.
What advice would you give your college self or other recent graduates about navigating the transition from school to work?
Transitioning from school to work means entering a new realm where practical skills, workplace dynamics and professional etiquette play a significant role. It takes time to become proficient in your job. Remember, every challenge or setback is an opportunity to grow and develop new skills. Having a strong work ethic is essential for success. This means being dedicated, motivated and committed to performing your best in your job responsibilities. However, it’s equally responsible to recognize the importance of taking care of your well-being. Transitioning to the workforce can sometimes lead to a high-pressure environment with demanding expectations. Neglecting your physical and mental health can ultimately harm your overall performance and happiness. Finding a balance between work and personal life is crucial for success and satisfaction.
How do you approach networking and building professional relationships, and what tips would you offer to others starting out?
Authenticity is key when it comes to networking. Early in my career, I mistakenly believed fitting in required an interest in football or golf. But I soon learned there are so many other things to discuss beyond sports. I’ve acknowledged that football and golf are not my forte, and that’s perfectly fine! The most effective way to build strong relationships is by connecting with people who share common interests and values with you. You’ll naturally develop meaningful connections by being true to yourself and seeking out those who resonate with your passions.
What's your favorite hobby or activity outside of work, and how did you get into it?
Skiing! I’ve been skiing since I was young. During the pandemic, I moved out to Breckenridge, Colorado, and skied every weekend. It was the best time!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Teleportation! I love traveling and exploring new places. Teleportation would make it so easy to go to an island in Europe for the day!
What are some fun facts about you?
I’m the oldest of three. I did my first semester of college abroad in Greece. I’ve lived in Spain and Greece.
